Description
In his "Reflections on the Cynic Jesus Thesis," Paul Rhodes Eddy reassembles a number of adverse criticisms of "the thesis" in general that have been advanced by various authors, a sort of litany with set versicles and responses. (1) Burton Mack, John D. Crossan, Leif Vaage, and others are able to respond for themselves. I am at times singled out by Eddy for particular mention, and so I am grateful for being 'allowed here to rehearse and elaborate a little some of the arguments I had deployed to counter in advance many of the rebuttals Eddy parades, but which he appears to have missed in the books and essays of mine that he cites. Cynicism, repeats Eddy, had at best "a low profile" until the mid-first century, and only then a "revival," "'after the death of Jesus." (2) It is true that named, educated Cynic authors emerge only then, but it is also true that many scholars have, for instance, been finding Paul confidently deploying Cynic topoi in a way that indicates a widespread popular currency already in his century, along with much more evidence for the prevalence of popular Cynicism in the first century. (3) Eddy makes no attempt to dispute or reinterpret this evidence, apparently preferring simply to repeat such received opinion as supports his case. Marie-Odile Goulet-Caze, on whose authority Eddy elsewhere relies, herself concludes from given evidence that the continuity of Cynicism was in no way broken over the centuries. (4)
